Not too Italian, Not too good

Gambino's offers below par semi-Italian American cuisine. Being a lover of New York style brick oven pizza, I ordered a pie with spinach, mushroom, and meatball topping. The pizza was overloaded with undercooked over-processed mozzarella on top of unmemorable crust with undetectable sauce and toppings. The pizza was undercooked and greasy. Like Chuck E. Cheese's. Basically, overprice and unflavorful. To give credit were it is deserved. The staff was great. The entrees may be better, but I doubt it.

Gambino's is back! After a year or so in which they razed the old building and started from scratch, they've rebuilt in the same location. The new, much larger restaurant is clean, bright, and modern-looking, and they have a decent menu to match. We had dinner there the weekend before Christmas, so it was quiet, with just a couple of family groups dining in. Service was decent and the food was good. We started with a very satisfying antipasto platter of salami, cheese, olives, ham, bread, and olive oil with balsamic vinegar for dipping. We were a little disappointed that they didn't have a ministrone or the lentil soup which had been a great feature at the original Gambino's. Let's hope they bring that back. Our main course was a thin crust all-meat pizza with extra toppings (mmm, f

For some reason, they closed down a year or two ago, but fairly recently they reopened and have a really nice looking, clean place. I couldn't say where they were located before, but they are still close to the U of I across the street from the pita pit and taco time on sixth street. While they are a little pricey, maybe too much so for your average college-students budget, the portion sizes are HUGE. I easily make two to three meals of the dishes they serve. I have not tried their stuffed pizza because of how long it takes and its cost, but people i have talked to say that they would recommend it. I am very sensitive to certain tastes and smells and they seem to use just the right amount of garlic in their food. The other italian restaurant, Tucci's, on the east side of town uses way too much and until recently was the only place within 7 miles to get italian food. So i am glad to have Gambino's as an alternative. The Chicago-themed restaurant has a nice atmosphere, but can get
